Land Acknowledgment
Standing with Indigenous Communities
The Good Citizen Studio is situated in Tkaronto or what is colonially known as Toronto, the sacred territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. The studio recognizes the systemic injustices and land dispossession brought upon by colonization and stands in solidarity with Indigenous peoples, working to ensure that it is responsive to Indigenous voices and engages in professional activities that honors and celebrates Indigenous dreams.
The Good Citizen Studio is founded by a first-generation immigrant, who remains committed to understanding allyship, her role within it, and respecting the land that Indigenous peoples have valued since time immemorial. It continues to think about its responsibility to support Indigenous communities, one of the ways in which it does so is by pledging to protect local lands. It acknowledges the environmental destruction caused by Western knowledge systems and emphasizes the importance of engaging with the environment in a manner that is respectful, reverent, and responsible. The studio pledges to work in alignment with Indigenous values, as defined by Indigenous peoples, including principles of kinship, reciprocity, respect, and responsibility.
The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) is an essential resource dedicated to preserving the memory and legacy of Canada's residential school system and its profound impacts on Indigenous communities. The studio encourages you to visit the website here: https://nctr.ca/
